Does anyone know if this can be accomplished?

Hi- I am wondering after I use a convertor to convert my dvds to .mkv files. I would like to USB plug my external Hardrive into the blu ray player to list my library of movies and play the ones I select. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks Is this possible? Is there an easier way??
