I know it's a bit late but I had the exact same issue, rolled back to 8.45.88 and it worked perfectly. I know that they just did an update to 8.50 and I just tested it and it still has the same issue, seems to detect 7.1 sound and switch to 7.1 when you are running etc but as soon as it doesn't...
