keyboard locked

I turned on my Acer Aspire 7739Z and when the windows 7 logon screen appears, prompting me for my password, I am able to use the mouse to click in the password box, but when I type the letters nothing shows, it only beeps. I think I am somehow locked out of the computer. This happened before...
