2000 layer photoshop document causing my MBP 2.2 i7 to run slow

Hello folks. I'm new on here. I'm a Web Designer and use photoshop for creating marketing emails for products. I have a template in place and every week I add products (layers) to it. I am nearing 2000 layers.

My question is, should my computer run slow due to working on this large photoshop document? I think I have enough ram and cpu power for me to run both photoshop and do other things, but this document sometimes runs slow and takes time to save and open. Is there anything I can do to make my macbook pro run smoother?

Or is there a way I can make my photoshop template lighter?
My computer specs: MBP 2.2 i7 with Momentus XT 750 and 8GB RAM

Well, you can check your CPU usage and memory usage in task manager under the performance and processes tab. You can access task manager: CTRL + ALT + DELTE

Thanks, but I'm running a OS X. I have checked the processes and the cpu picks up in usage as so does the memory. Just wondering if that is normal for an 8GB RAM Macbook pro.
