$299 intel premium 320gb vs $399 amd a8-4500m 500gb

I'm looking to buy a new laptop and I need it asap so I can't really wait until windows8 comes out. The choices are below

I tried both of them at the store earlier today. The 2nd one seemed faster when I was internet surfing but internet explorer on it also crashed several times (but re-opened fairly quickly). I don't know much about processors but I had thought the amd a8-4500m would be faster than the intel b970. Is what I experienced expected?

I intend to use the laptop for internet surfing and programming with php. I don't intend to use it for gaming. Since I do multi-task sometimes, I thought the amd would be much better since it is quad core.

I don't really need the cd-dvd drive as I rarely use CDs or DVDs, but I do need to use them once in a while. On my current laptop, I'm only using about 150gb, so 500gb isn't necessary for me.

The 2nd one also had some bad reviews from people saying the space bar, touch pad, and sound weren't great, but I experienced no problems with them

What do you guys think is the better deal for me? I think the 2nd one is but I just want to make sure that the AMD a8-4500m isn't supposed to be significantly faster than the intel premium b970

I can pay more than $400, it's just that the other laptops I checked online didn't have much better processors unless they were alot more expensive. The only stores nearby are a bestbuy, Fry's, and office max. The Fry's didn't have any laptops I liked when I checked online. The office max had one similar to the $299 laptop I mentioned earlier, but it seems slower, so I ruled it out.

thanks for the suggestion, but that laptop is not in stock at the Fry's stores that are close to me. I need the laptop by Tuesday so I don't want to order it online. The brand doesn't matter that much, but I want to avoid buying a HP, Acer, and similar brands

the 1st one is available at one of the nearby Fry's, but the 2nd one is not available at the best buy. But why do you suggest these laptops? Do you think they are better than the two laptops I originally considered? why? They have dual-cores processors instead of a quad core one. But they would still be significantly faster than the ones I originally considered?

The core count is a factor that helps the processor performance but there are more things that help the processor performance (which i really dont know very well) like hyperthreading, core clock, IPC, etc.

This is a mobile processor performance chart (the lower position the better),
the dual core i5 has the position 59, the pentium B970 the position 129 and the A8 the position 167.
