Question 3-pole vs 4-pole jacks...

I know what the inside connections go to in each one... 3-pole jacks are for headphones, while 4-pole jacks are for headsets.
My question is: Practically, can I use one instead of the other? Do they fit OK? Do they work? Is there any danger for the phone?

Yes you can use both on either jack you will just not get the mic working, the headphone part should work in most devices.
