I have $300 and I want to buy a camera, I was leaning towards a compact because I can carry it every where easily,but of course the picture quality wont always be the best.

My question is buy a brand new compact or buy a used SLR ?

SLRs are better quality cameras that will yield better pictures. Generally, SLRs have more flexibility and permit the use of inter-changeable lenses.

Go with the SLR, but make sure you test it out by taking a few pictures. Make sure that all features work. Read the manual too.
