Trying to help a friend of mine purchase a laptop. She has around $400 that she is willing to spend on the laptop and no more.

I've been searching and I'm not entirely sure on what to look for in laptops. I'm not exactly sure what type of hardware I should be looking for that is worth $400.

Also, processors, specifically, are confusing for me in laptops, what should I be looking for in processors?

Buy a used Asus G50VT laptop on Ebay and then upgrade to an X9100 (overclockable 3.06HGZ) CPU for cheap and install a hybrid or SSD drive. It'll be pretty fast then. Probably about $400 for the laptop then upgrades
But then you'd need to buy a battery for it since the old one would be worn out probably for $25 or so ehh nevermind

What are the uses of the laptop. Is it just simple web browsing and word documents. How important is portability, battery life, screen size?

As a general recommendation for school i'd suggest the Acer S3 series. They come with a hybrid drive so they are pretty fast, powerful enough for most students, very light, thin, and cheap.

Different specs have different prices, but look at the first option to fit in your price range
