There is simply no way to reliably and consistently deliver 4K content. Until I get get 4K content as easily as I do everything else then I just won't invest.

So, dearest TV manufacturers, how about you put all this R&D money into a big joint venture to massively accelerate content delivery? Get satellite and cable connectivity capable of delivering multiple 4K streams, research data compression techniques to bang 4K content down internet connections that aren't reliant on capped 100Mbit fibre.

(and Sony, get a decent 4K XDCAM on the market)

THEN when you have a delivery infrastructure, you can all return to competing for my money on what to actually watch it all on.

The problem is, I guess, that consumers just have so many internet capable devices at home that smart TVs are simply not needed. What consumers really want is a CHEAP screen with good picture quality and basic TV capabilities. My BD player is "smart" and can browse the web/stream netflix, youtube, spotify, media files, whatever, my receiver the BD player is connected to is "smart", can stream stuff, my tablet and smartphone and PC can stream anything via the receiver or direct HDMI connection. There just is no real need for added "smart" stuff in the TV, in fact I would guess that most people would consider a web capable TV a security risk (as in "spying on the user"). Just make the TV a good, cheap display and nothing more. On my recent TVs, I simply disabled any networking options because I did not need them.

I'd be happy just to have a proper 1080p 60hz provider in the UK rather than the over-compressed 1080i crap that Sky provides before worrying about 4k.

4K is absolutely retarded. TV isn't even 1080p yet, and game consoles BARELY reach 1080p AND.... a lot of people say they don't even notice the difference betwee 720p and 1080p.

Yet they're pushing 2160p? Who the fudge thought that was a good idea?

What companies need to do is push different models for different needs. All TVs seem to have compromises, but the compromises people are ready to make to keep it affordable isn't the same for everyone.

They have to make, for example, a TV that has ok image quality, with ok speakers, with ok smart features, for the average go. One that has the best image quality, but no speakers and no smart features for those who only care about image quality. Etc. make different products for different people! Now it's all or nothing. Either you have crappy image, with crappy sound, with no smart features, OR you have superb image, superb sound, way too much smart features and 3D and... and big fat price tag.

Personally, what I would want to buy ideally, is a display with the BEST image quality possible, with best motion resolution and input lag, etc. for gaming, but WITHOUT 3D, 4k, speakers, TV tuner, smart features, but no, if I want a good picture, I have to pay for all that crap I don't need.
