5.1 surround sound issues

When I coke the my iPhone to my home cinema system for music I get the surround sound experience, when I connect my iPad it only works on the front speaker plus the sub woofer, anybody help with this??

I assume you are using the lightening connector and not the 3.5mm which is stereo only.

Then I suspect the iPad player can't do surround.

On most surround sound receivers each input remembers the last surround sound setting you used on it.
If the iPad is on a different input than the iPhone set that input to the same surround mode as the iPhone input.
