5504 vs 5040

OK, so I got myself a refurb 5040 and really like it. I'm enjoying the
commercial skip feature. At some point I will add a second unit, and I'm
assuming that by then the 5040 refurbs will be gone. But here's my
question -- Even though the 5504 doesn't have the commercial skip feature of
the 5040, does it mark the commercials so I could still edit them out using
ReVue and then stream them back to the 5504 from from video server (running
DVArchive) minus commercials?

I don't know about the commercials being marked, but if the reason for
waiting is budgetary, you could pick up another unit now for $99 and
wait till later to activate it.

Yes, the reason is budgetary. The only problem with waiting to activate it,
is that if I get a defective unit, I won't know it till after the 90-day
warranty is up....

You'd have a few days use to ensure that it's not DOA but you're right
to be concerned longer term. However, the first unit I ever had, a
2020, was a gift and it was about 2 years before I first installed it.
Turned out to be DOA! I called and explained that I had never opened the
box and they agreed that since it had never been registered it was still
"new" and swapped it out for a 3030 under warranty. Of course, that was
the old company and I don't know how they'd handle it now.
There's always ebay.

Yes, a 5500 series machine does mark the commercials. In fact, if you stream
a show from a 5500 to a 5000, the commercials will automatically skip as if
it had been originally recorded on the 5000. And when watching on the 5500,
commercials will skip if you press the -> button as soon as the commercial
block starts. The 5500 just won't automatically do it for you.

Late model 50XX and 55xx are identical in all respects except serial
number. You can always tell a 55XX that is is a 50XX through wirns.

What exactly is Wirns? I've managed to figure out DVArchive, RTVTools and
ReVue, yet I can't seem to find any info on exactly what Wirns is. ????
