7.1 surround sound .. i am confused :S

I'm looking for 7.1 surround sound headphones for my pc and have been reading up on forums but cant find a answer. Some questions i would like to ask are:

1. Do I need a sound card? i currently have a asus P8P67 motherboard which has Realtek® ALC 892 8-Channel High Definition Audio. link : http/www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8P67/#specifications
2. I have been reading a bit about this 'virtual surround sound' nonsense and surely if your going to spend the money on a 7.1 surround sound headset then you would get true 7.1 surround sound wouldn't you?
3. Is now a good time to buy a 7.1 surround sound headset? Is there going to be some new technology round the corner that maybe I should wait for?

Many of the 5.1/7.1 headsets are now using just 2 speakers and virtual surround sound. You will have to check the specs of the unit you are getting.

You MB sound supports 5.1/7.1 without issues.

Some even have a built in sound card and run just off of usb.
