I want to buy DELL XPS 13 laptop. But i have 2 choices. First is the Intel's 8th generation processor with 8GB Ram and the second is 7th generation with 16 Gb Ram. So what u think is more better. I've heard that 8th gen is more faster and better then 7th, but what about ram? I cant get 8th gen with 16 ram. So please help me. What will be a better choice for me as a future network engineer and kinda i want to use VM with Linux to learn. Thanks for all.

Can you list model names of laptops in question?
If cpu core/thread count and gpu specs are the same, then go for 16GB model.

Edit: i3-7100U, i5-7200U - are 2core/4thread cpus. i7-8550U - is 4core/8thread cpu.
i7 8th gen - obviously is much better. Go for that and upgrade ram later.

Go for 16gb ram, 4 cores is still enough and will continue to be for at least a few years.

4 cores is only "ok" for your use. A 6 core would be a lot nicer. You are going to need a lot of ram to use VMs.
The theory that 4 cores is good enough for today does not factor in your intended use.

ALso, ram is easier to replace than processors, particularly in a laptop. Get the fastest laptop you can with the most cores you can. Then add ram as you can afford it, for VM work I typically shoot for 32gb or above..
