ac-3 out

i have just picked up a proscan psld-43. i need to know if anyone knows if
there is an ac-3 out conversion for this unit. it has an optical digital
out, but not ac-3. i am just getting back into ld's and still have few in
the closet(starwars, etc). my receiver has ac-3 rf in but its coax. i
remember back a few years people talking about adding an ac-3 out circuit to
certain players. the circuit just had a coax dongle that just fed out the
back panel of the player. i think it was mainly pioneer units but not sure.
i am pretty sure that pioneer built the ld players for thomson(proscan, rca).
if anyone knows anything about this, could you please point me in the right
direction for details/info.

thanks in advance,
c.

This is a secondary concern. LD players output their AC-3 signal in modulated
RF form, which the vast majority of A/V recievers are incapable of directly
understanding and decoding. You'll need to have an AC-3/RF output added to the
LD player and then you'll need to add a demodulator in-line. AFAIK, the better
demodulators from Yamaha and Pioneer all included both optical and coaxial
outputs, so your reciever is properly equipped.

Pioneer built a lot of units for outside sources. The problem here is that much
of Proscan's hardware (including TVs) was simply upgraded RCA equipment wearing
Proscan badging. So units that Pioneer sold to Thompson to be sold as RCA
machines could have eventually found their way to market with Proscan
badges. The Proscan PSLD46 looks alot like a Pioneer machine to me, maybe a
CLD-D606, but I'm not positive of that. Mitsubishi's CLD-7057 was internally
identicle to Pioneer's CLD-D704 but the facplate was slightly different I
think.

I don't own a PSLD43, but the PSLD46 has AC3 out and seems to be a dual
drawer clone of the D504. Both have a shuttle remote.

The PSLD45 is also dual drawer and seems to be a clone of the D503. No AC3
out. Both have a shuttle remote.

The PSLD43 is a single drawer unit, and would likely be a clone of the D502.
The PSLD43 has a shuttle remote, but the Pioneer doesn't have a wheel.
Neither had AC3 out. It seems to be very similar to an RCA LDR600. The
LDR600 that I have has a Pioneer head flipping mechanism and comes with a
Pioneer style red transit screw.

The remotes on the Proscan and Pioneer players are not interchangeable.
They use a different protocol.

If you are adding an AC3 board to your Proscan, you'll need to find the
place called AFM-RF. The left and right analog signals are unfiltered and
not yet separated here. The emitter of the RF buffer transistor is a good
place to tap in with your circuit input.

Kevin Nakano's circuit is a suitable solution.

The modification you seek can be as simple as a one transistor design.

not found a good source of info on the proscan. any ideas where i could
find a schematic or any tech materials on the psld43?

thanks,

Unfortunately, if this is a clone of the D502 as I suspect, even Pioneer no
longer sells the service manual. A few of the service people in this
newsgroup have microfiche and such, but they are usually too busy to dig
through the boxes or fire up the viewer. Your best clue is to see if you
can find Q352 and/or Q351 on the audio board. If so, post back to the
newsgroup for help on determining the other four or five connection points
you will need. Take another look at the Nakano website and the modification
photos.

One of the laaudio users claims the following for his D502:
"The Tap point are as follows: RF TAP-Collector Leg of Q351 (2SC2786, middle
leg); MUTE-Wire Jumper W155 (active high)."

Dont be afraid to take the lid off to look. If you're not skilled at
soldering and building PC boards, you'll likely have to pay more than your
player is worth to upgrade it. CLD-D504s and D505's, as well as several
clones can be had cheaply on eBay.
