Help! My acer aspire 5532 notebook keyboard decided to stop working . I run windows 7 home premium and filter keys are turned off. It was working fine yesterday, why did it stop/

Any help appreciated!

Hello anonymous maximus

Many times simple reboot rectifies the issue. If you have already tried rebooting and the issue persists, you may want to follow the steps below:

> Click Start.

> Right-click Computer from the Start menu.

> Click Manage from the context menu.

> From the left pane of the opened Computer Management snap-in, click to select Device Manager.

> From the right pane, expand the Keyboards tree.

> From the displayed list of installed keyboards, right-click Standard PC/2 Keyboard, and click Uninstall from the context menu.

> Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstallation process.

> Restart the computer after the driver is uninstalled.

> Once the PC reboots, check if the keyboard is working this time.

The issue should be resolved by now.

Let me know if this helps. :)

Hello again anonymous maximus

If the method discussed earlier didn't work, you can try restoring Windows to an earlier restore point, thus leaving the hard reset option as the last resort.

To restore your computer:

> Go to Control Panel >> System and Security >> Backup and Restore >> Recover system settings on your computer.

> Click the Open System Restore button.

> From the opened System Restore wizard, follow the on-screen instructions to restore Windows to the restore point when your keyboard was working fine.

If even this method fails:

> Unplug all the USB and power cables from your laptop,

> Pull the battery out.

> Press down and hold the power button for 30 seconds to hard reset your laptop.

> Re-attach the battery.

> Power on the laptop and try using the keyboard now.

Let me know if this method works.

Neither worked, although I wonder if I'm removing the battery correctly. Do I remove the battery while the computer is on or after I turn the power button?

Hello again anonymous maximus

First you need to shut down the computer normally. (Not from the Power button but by clicking the Start button and then clicking Shut down.)

Then you need to take out the battery. (When the computer is powered off and is unplugged from the power supply.)

After this you need to press the power button for 30 seconds.

If this method doesn't work, you can try connecting an external USB keyboard and check if it is working. If the external keyboard is working, you can try turning the filter keys on and restarting the system, and then turning the filter keys off and then restarting the system again.

If none of the methods work, you can go for clean Windows installation (not recommended though).

Hope this method helps. :) Good Luck!!

Do I need to re-attach the battery I'm currently using or put a new one in?

You can use the same battery. The point is, the laptop should be without any battery while performing hard reset. :)
