Battery light flashes red and battery does not charge. Adaptor output is 19.4V. With battery inserted, laptop shuts down after a minute or so. With battery removed it stays on. Output at laptop battery terminals is 3.4V at 2 of 6 plates, but I am not sure I am reading this correctly.

Hi,
Please do try to insert the battery in the laptop while it's powered on and in the desktop. If the laptop still turns off by itself could be that your battery is already worn out. Lastly also try using a different AC adapter if available.
