Acer laptop aspire with wiped out Vista os what can I do to make it work again?

I have an older Acer aspire laptop circa 2006 it came with Vista.Almost immediatly the battery lost it's ability to charge and not long after, the screen dies...BUT...I had a friend transfer all the data to my new acer laptop (2012) and now have basically a shell of a laptop.I'd really like to try and load a Windows 7 OS and hook it to the TV...I don't have the $ to buy a disc, plus I'm not so sure that would work..any ideas???

reinstall Vista from the built in recovery...RTM ...
