Hey all,

Just a simple form post I wanted to make about the V17 Nitro laptop that I will be purchasing and upgrading in the following month around Christmas time.
Link: http://www.amazon.com/Acer-VN7-792G-79LX-17-3-inch-Notebook-Windows/dp/B015XBKYB0/

It's a nice laptop from my hardware understandings and its rather new (DDR4 ram, newest i7 6th gen) and its great for what I will be doing. Only problem is it has a rather slow HDD (5400RPM 1TB) and it will be a big bottleneck in OS/Program launching times (and other various things like file transfer time etc). So I opted to purchase a M.2 SSD to be in replacement of the OS installed drive (in other words, SSD will have the OS, the HDD will be for storage).
SSD Link: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-850-EVO-250-MZ-N5E250BW/dp/B00TGIVZTW/

So will this SSD work with this laptop? Does the laptop even have a M.2 slot? If its a pcie slot (something new to me, never herd of such on a laptop before) how many lanes will it have (950 pro would be epic :D )? I know voiding warranty is not a great thing to do with laptops, so will I void it when I take it apart to install the SSD?

I don't see many take-apart videos on YouTube specifically about this laptop (still too new?) and I have no clue if the motherboard/system layout is the same as previous models in the V17 Nitro series, so, i would have to be extremely careful (that is if there is no reference to go by) when I take it apart.

If you have any recommendations on other SSDs/Laptops, feel free to let me know.

Thanks,

Yes, this SSD will work great with this laptop, you will just take the DVDRW out and you're done. Getting a better ssd is rather pointless as you won't feel that much of a difference and 250gb is plenty. Only thing which you might consider is like a hundred bucks more for a laptop with a GTX 970m instead of the 960m since the GPU makes a huge difference when it comes to long term laptop usability (for gaming that is).

Yeah, the GTX 970M is far better then the 960 in every way. I may spend a few hundred extra bucks to get a laptop with a 970M. My aim is to have a slim laptop (anything under 1 inch is slim in the gaming category) that is both functional and fast to the touch. In the end, its just how much money I will get at the end of this months pay.

Wait, why would I have to take out the DVD/RW? is it in the way of installing the SSD? The model I'm getting from amazon is the one without the 256GB SSD.

Update: just checked my link, for some reason its broken... Here's the new one:

Oh yeah my bad, generally in 15.6" u have to drop the optical drive because you have no space for an ssd but this is 17.3".Also slim and gaming (good gpu) don't and should NOT go hand to hand, as they need better cooling.

Ok, well thanks for the reply, this is all I need.

But, I'm also interested in replacing that slow HDD with a hybrid drive ( http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Laptop-2-5-Inch-Internal-ST1000LM014/dp/B00B99JUBQ/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1447131631&sr=1-2&keywords=SSHD ) and putting the slow drive in this adapter I found. Will the laptop be able to support another HDD in the DVD bay via an adapter? I don't know the thickness of the DVD/CD drive as there is multiple thicknesses. (Link for adapter: http://www.amazon.com/Protronix-Optical-Drive-Universal-12-7mm/dp/B004XIU4T2/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1447200212&sr=1-5&keywords=2.5+laptop+bay )

Not sure if it will support the hdd, the ssd and an additional hdd, couldn't find that much info on the mobo, but I dont think there is a point of this. A faster hdd is likely to just add more noise, unless you really need the additional space, else you won't feel much speed. Hybrid disks usually shine only when you don't have an ssd.
