All USB ports don't work

For some reason all of my USB ports stopped recognizing flash drives and other devices that are plugged in. Interesting, the USB port with my wireless mouse plugged in continued to work. I know there are many posts about mics not working they all seemed to stop working after some kind of install but mine just stopped.
If there is anyone out there who can help, it would be most appreciated. Please put any instructions in the simplest terms. Don't assume I know what any technological terms mean or how any of the inner workings work. I am a dinosaur or rather a technosaur. Please help me. I'm desperate.

More information needed:

E.g.,Make and model computer, Operating System, etc.. Are the USB ports USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 (usually color coded blue)?

Where is the transceiver for the wireless mouse plugged in - front or back? Does the wireless mouse work if you move the transceiver to the opposite end?
