Analog camcorder movies to digital files?

I'm trying to transfer a large amount of old home movies from their tapes to a video file. Does anyone have a software recommendation for this? Is there any hardware I'll need?

When you say tapes, do you mean VHS tapes or camcorder tapes? If VHS try this link:
