Are my hdmi connectors on receiver too old

I have a pioneer vsx 1121 receiver. I think it was purchased just when hdmi came into use. It doesn’t seem to be able to work with my cable box. Can’t switch channels. Must connect it to tv to work.
Should I get a new receiver?
Box:Cisco 8742HDC
TV: Panasonic TC-P65V10

You can't switch channels or you don't get an image and/or sound when using HDMI through the receiver? If you can't switch channels using the receiver remote, that does not mean it's an issue with HDMI.

You can work around the problem by connecting the optical audio output of the cable box or TV to the receiver for sound.
