Aspire 6920g blackscreen, fn f6 shows for a few seconds, vga works

Hi,

I have an acer aspire 6920g which has gone black screen. when I press fn f7 or f6 the screen comes on for a second and blank again. I tested an external monitor it works . from what I have read on forums and I suspect it may be the inverter.. but not sure.

can you guide me what I should consider and how to test the inverter, etc any steps I should take to fix this

also saw something about updating the bios... not sure if i should go down that route if it can cause other issues. how can I test this?
