My friend is asking me to buy his 2 year old notebook. He is wanting to purchase a new ASUS or Alienware.

He is asking for $750, I am offering $600, since I have that much in cash.

But I need to know whether this will run any of the current games and future games, I recently purchased "Ghost Recon, Wildlands" and "Fractured But Whole" and I was gaming "The Division" , "Dying Light" on my desktop before I moved, now I have no space for desktop.

Any advise.

Well the processor is still pretty good. True quad core mobile i7. 870m is somewhere between a desktop GTX760 and a GTX770. I would lean more towards the 760 even though it has more SMX units, they will be running at a lower speed to meet thermal requirements.

For comparison you can pick up a shiny new laptop with a desktop GTX1060 for around $1000 with similar specs, but with an SSD.

Thanks for the quick reply, I only have $600 stashed away, just for this purpose, I also forgot to mention, he ditched the main drive for two Hybrid SSD/HD 1TB Drives... Can you recommend some notebook with the GTX 1060 at $1K... Thanks again.

It would run modern games, perhaps not at desirable settings in all cases, but the GPU is a Kepler, so only two generations behind, still fully supported.

I wasn't really digging into the details of each model, and I don't go much for high end laptops. Saw quite a few ASUS and MSI models $1000-1100 with an i7-6700HQ and a GTX1060 3GB. Probably making room for the 7th gen CPUs.

Newegg has the best laptop search, if you find models you like, then you can wander over to Amazon for a price check. Doesn't look like any decent sales are going on for this class of laptop.

Standard HDD:

Not bad for an open box:

Companies like Sager that offer Clevo chassis direct (basically the company that makes gaming laptops) you can get a pretty customized setup. Even desktop class processors, though now the OEMs are offering that as well.

I agree on $650, if he did a complete restore of the OS with a clean copy of of Windows 7, (I still prefer Windows 7) and he provided the original Windows 8.1 drive, he slipped up and told me he never used the original drive, he pulled the original drive and added the 2-1TB Drives and installed Windows 8.1 and then upgraded it to Windows 10.. I am not ready for Windows 10.
