My computer began freezing while i was in a game about two days ago. When it freezes, i am forced to shut it down manually by holding down the power button. At first, it would not freeze in safe mode and i unchecked any startup tasks that were not essential, which didn't help. Then, startup repair seemed to fix it until today. Now, after freezing during a game, it started to freeze during the launch process for safe mode and while windows was "checking my disks" or something like that. I was able to access safe mode once, however, and i uninstalled avast antivirus (to no avail) because I heard it causes problems.

Well, you can use some data recovery tool for DOS mode. Check the Ubuntu Live CD approach out: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267999-32-recover-data-mode
Just boot up Ubuntu from a CD or a flash drive and see whether you will be able to access the drive. In case the issue persists, then all of this is not caused by your HDD.
Alternatively, you can take it out of the laptop and attach it as a secondary to another(working) system.

Yeah it's currently freezing fast enough so I can't even get to my desktop to save anything or test the drive.
