Hi my issue is how to connect a DVD player to my AV receiver which has no HDMI connector and the optical connector on the av receiver is been used, its connected to the sky box for the 5.1 surround sound whilst watching sky TV, obviously I want Dolby sound / digital from the DVD. Hope it kinda makes sense . Thanks

Your options are
1. Connect the skybox and DVD to the TV via HDMI. Connect the TV optical out to the receiver.
2. Use an external HDMI input selector with audio extraction to provide a digital out from both the skybox and DVD.

3. If the DVD has optical audio out you can use a Toslink input selector.

4. Or convert one of the optical outputs to coax digital and use the coax input of the receiver

Hello.

Why do you not use the Optical connector of your TV set?

Usually, the best option for sound on every source is to connect your DishTV and DVD directly to your TV set using HDMI. Then connect an optical wire from the TV set to the receiver directly.
When you switch inputs on the tv, the optical audio output will automatically select the audio and send it to the receiver.

Hi my TV doesn't have optical only HDMI, the av receiver has only 1 optical that's used for sky. But I'm thinking of not buying a DVD player and using my Xbox to watch DVDs but again how do I connect the Xbox to the av receiver with no HDMI. Thanks

If your TV set has no optical output and no analog output, then your only option to connect a receiver without HDMI is to use an HDMI extractor, then connect your receiver to it:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4V24NB4154

This item connects in between the XBOX and the TV. One HDMI wire comes from the XBOX and connects on the extractor in the HDMI IN port. Then you connect an HDMI wire from the HDMI OUT of the extractor to the TV set.
Then you can use either the Optical output or R/L output of the extractor to connect to your av receiver. You can see the R/L and optical outputs in this photo:

Hi yes i have one of those HDMI extractors they are ok but when the units not been used for a while it goes into a standbye mode so i have to turn it off and on at the plug to activate it to be honest its a pain. you would think it would activate its self when it reads a signal from the hdmi lead when i turn on the tv and av reciever but no.
