Hi,
I have acquired a Canon 350d/XT with the 15-85 lens, a Sigma 70-300 and
hope to get a macro lens. Outgrown my current bag. ?suggestions for a
bag large enough to carry the above, + extras like a lightweight
waterproof, water bottle, guide books etc. Preferably a 2 strap
backpack, but shoulder bag also possible

Thanks,

Gordon

Gordon,

Look over this system, http://www.kinesisgear.com/index.html. It's a
completely modular system that allows you to connect pieces together, use a
shoulder strap, a waist belt, and even a backpack. The nicest thing about
the system is you only need to take what you need and your unneeded
equipment is left behind still in it's individual cases.

I use the waist belt and attached to it is a large zoom lens case which
holds a 100-400 and a 2x converter, a filter case which I use for polarizers
and my CF cards and as a lens cap holder when I'm shooting, a flash case w/
my 420EX and 2 sets of spare batteries, a water bottle holder, and a two
lens case that I actually hold my Digital Rebel body and 18-55 lens (lens
not attached) along with a cotton cloth, and in the front pouch my shutter
release cable, a couple of plastic trash bags and other miscellaneous items.
Surprisingly even with all that weight its all very comfortable around my
waist and doesn't restrct movement at all.

I also have a medium holster where I keep my 20D w/ 28-135 lens attached and
hood properly in place. The holster has room of my 550ex flash and a pouch
for CF cards in the lid. I don't usual attach that to the belt because the
camera is around my neck.

Again the nicest thing is the modularity. When I'm out at a sporting event
or a parade or sight seeing, I can carry all my stuff around my waist and
have it handy all the time. When I'm off to an event like a wedding or a
party I can attach the items I need to the holster such as the flash case,
or an extra lens case and use the shoulder strap.

I love it and it was well worth the money, which is yet another advantage
because while, each peice isn't cheap you can buy over time as you need it.

Both Lowpro and Tamrac sell similar systems but I found the Kinesis system
to be most complete and versatile of the three.
