Battery not charging

I was told by Dell last night that I need a new motherboard as my battery is not charging.
I have a dell Inspiron 3537. Can't I remove the battery and use as is or will it harm the computer.
It's not everyday that people have over 2 hundred dollars to spend on a part.

You can use it without the battery when plugged into the wall socket no problem.
