http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ has a good review on some. We use BitDefender at work and it works great. If you are looking for a cheap / free alternative, AVG seems to do its job well.

A multiple layered approach is the best way of security (apart from common sense)
On a typical Windows 8.1 x64 system this will suffice:

PC Settings:
========
All accounts are limited (non administrator)
Windows defender - on
Windows firewall - on
UAC - max settings
Download and install CryptoPrevent to patch up exploitable flaws in your system
Sandboxie (optional, this will sandbox your internet browser aka Chrome)
Zemana anti-keylogger (optional, self explanatory)

Web browsers:
==========
Sandboxed Google Chrome (x64) with µBlock + Disconnect extensions installed
Do all internet things in the sandboxed browser: email, banking, etc...
Disable Java

Before shutting down the PC, clear out the sandbox so nothing of whatever you did on the internet remains (temp files, etc...)

Because most of these are built into Windows 8.1, the system runs so smoothly without any hiccups.

After chasing the reviews and $$$ over the years for a really good antivirus solution, Eset recently blew my socks off, something basic like Eset's NOD32 AV. Their product doesn't try and do everything it keeps it simple.
