best simple video editor, free, for WinXP / 7 / 8.1. please?

i'd like to learn how to edit some of my random videos, or at least clean a few up and add some on-screen text.

free.

what's a good SIMPLE video editor that i should look at, and install on my WinXP, and 7, and 8.1 machines? i'm going to also install VSDC which i gather is much more powerful but has NO manuals or anything, and is probably too complex for a newb.
