black screen on Dell studio 1535

Thanks I will try this. One more thing, the last time i had used the computer a message came up saying " display drive has stopped working and has now recovered' . One guy told me it's the hard drive and he can replace it for me and it should then be fine...is this possible?

Hi,

That error has something to do with your graphics card not with the hard drive. Do try these troubleshooting steps that may help in getting rid of that problem.
- Go to Device Manager and uninstall the graphics card driver.
- Open Programs and Features and uninstall anything related to the graphics card.
- Download and install the driver from the manufacturers site.
- Reboot the laptop once install then observe if you'll still get that error.
