Black screen unable to log into desktop

Once I log in my computer there is just a black screen I can see &move the mouse but nothing else. I've tried shutdown restart ctrl alt delete taking the battery out and still same black screen once I log in if I need to "reboot" how do I get to it from the log in screen? Or how can I fix this?

This has annoyingly happened on Win 8 to me many times. Usually a reboot fixes it for me. Also, turning off hybrid shutdown helps prevent these issues.
