Booting from external USB CdRom

I have a Sony VAIO laptop, my DVD drive is acting weird and does not recognize any DVD. Would I be able to reinstall Windows 7 from an external DVD-RW drive? The configuration for my laptop is given below:

Intel Core i3-2310M Processor 2.10 GHz
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit
RAM 2GB
Sony VAIO VPCEH15EN

You should be able to re-install Win7 from the hidden recovery partition on the HDD.

If you don't have the recovery partition still on your drive, then you will need to use that external DVD drive you have BUT make sure that in the BIOS you set it to boot from USB device 1st.
