Bought unlocked phone put sim in no signal?

Hi,

I bought a lg optimus 4x hd. I live in south africa and bought an unlocked phone that came from the uk. We have a network called Cell C and I put the sim card in and it says emergency calls only. I cant select a network cause there is no signal. can anyone help?

try taking the sim card out and putting it back in
if your phone could detect the sim card but couldn't use it your phone would say that the sim card is invalid
but it seems that your phone isn't even detecting that the sim card is in there
