Hello guys

I got my helios 300 Predator i7 8750h and Gtx 1060 6gb today from Amazon.

When I am on idle, the cpu temps: 60c - 75c and the fans suddenly runs really fast and loud then slows down and so on

While playing a game at max (Rainbow six siege), the temps of the Cpu: 95c-100c
This is while undervolting -0.125 which didnt do much and the laptop is constantly thermal throttling on XTU.

Literally the problem was noticable the moment the laptop was unpacked and still going. every stress test I make and the CPU throttles constantly at 2.8 GHz - 3.1 GHz

What are your suggestions?

Your best option may just be to ask Amazon if you can exchange it. Based on your high idle temps, it's possible the factory did a really bad paste job or something, and there's no reason you should have to fix that yourself on a new laptop.

I'm assuming you're using the laptop on a flat, hard surface with sufficient room beneath/around the laptop for decent airflow.

Idle temps should be in the 40s, maybe 50s. Max rated temp is 100 C, as you can see your laptop is hitting that and throttling. Some laptops do have poor cooling that results in high temps, you could try looking for reviews and see what other people are getting. But the fact that even idle temps are that high makes me think something is wrong.

Normal troubleshooting would be to clean/dust the laptop, which doesn't apply because yours is new. The next step would be to repaste the CPU. But that would void the warranty, possibly be difficult, and isn't something you should have to do on a new PC.

I am not experienced in benchmarking to know the full potentials of a device like a desktop and laptop. I did only see temps and undervolted but didnt see any difference. I dont know if I am just hallucinating or no but this happend literally out of the box and it has really good specs.

I would appreciate if someone would help me make sure 100% that this is a defective unit to Rma it back to amazon. I am willing to shoot a video of tests and the programs to see the temps and all these normal stuff to see if the laptop is defective. So can anyone tell me the steps to perform and video tape it and post it here to make the final decision?

thanks a lot

Download and run cinebench. Do a google search to find what other people with that CPU are getting for a score. Run it several times in a row, to see if the score starts dropping as it heats up.

Monitor clock speed and temps while running the benchmark. If you use a program such as hwinfo64, you can set it to write these values to a log file so you're able to go over temps and frequencies after the fact.

Here's a review you can use to compare results to.

What's your ambient room temperature?

Also, I noticed that when I perform a stress test like Aida64, the speed of the cpu is locked at 2.2GHz, and it also shows some throttling. is it normal not to turbo boost?

when I go on idle, the cpu goes to 3.86 then throttles then go back down to 2.2 or 2.5 or 3.5 then throttles then goes back to 3.86 then throttles and so on it never stops throttling at idle always throttling. i see this in XTU.

So I constantly ran Aida64, the moment it starts it begins throttling 20% for the whole test.
XTU is also constantly showing frequency going to 3.8GHz then throttles to 2.2GHz
Cinebench got 588cb and 74fps. another guy same laptop got 1000+cb and 100+fps

laptop body runs VERY VERY VERY HOT when running the tests after a short time

CPU temps are always 60-75 on idle and goes to 100 then immediately throttles then goes to 100 then throttles for the whole time.

Games: CS:GO highest FPS was 110!! it should go beyond 200 for a 1060 at least and it always drops every 5 secs to 28-42fps then goes to 90fps and so on.

I will contact amazon and return and hopefully they will return it and Acer learns from its mistakes so others dont get a unit like this one.
