Broken Laptop After Upgraded RAM

I have an older laptop (HP, Intel i3, about 5 years old) that I wanted to bring up to speed. I put in a new SSD and that worked amazing. So a week later I put in some new ram in the extra slot it had (exact same model as the original ram, didn't go over maximum allowed) and now my computer isn't responsive. The fan doesn't even turn on or even the light that it's plugged in. Nothing. I've tried just the old ram and even the old hard drive. I've tried even resetting the CMOS. Is there a fix for this or am I toast? Thanks for any input or information.
