Broken screen laptop

I have an Asus laptop. I broke the screen and now I'm trying to connect it to my lg monitor in which I'm having a difficult time. For one, I can't see anything on the screen. So when I press the Windows key and the letter P it gives me the option to do something but I can't see what it gives me the option to do. Please help is there any other way?

Connect the monitor, close the lid, it should force the graphics to output to the external screen.

Thank you, I've done that too, and it doesn't work. I'm able to see about two inches of my screen on the right hand side and so when I press FN, f8, I see that something pops up I'm just not able to see what it is or what to do or even how to toggle between whatever
