Vitals
Heating/voltage - HWMonitor
GPU monitoring - GPU-Z / EVGA Precision
CPU Monitoring - CPU-Z

It's just as important, if not more, to keep an eye on the vitals of your computer. Constantly being aware of temps and other attributes while using your rig can help you understand what's normal (and what's not) for your computers behavior. It also helps you discover the limits of it, thus allowing you to know just how far you can push your systems performance.

Performance
3DMark - Benchmark

There are also a lot of games that include benchmarks, and those benchmarks can be found online without needing to buy the game (stand alone). I would try looking around 3DGuru, as they have many benchmarks you can download for free and are safe.

Good luck with your new rig!
