Build Your Own Google Cardboard

Google Cardboard is a handmade virtual reality experience made of cardboard, lenses, a magnet and some fasteners. Google offers the Cardboard as a low-cost, open-source headset that you can use with your Android smartphone to enjoy a DIY virtual reality experience. Google also offers steps for you to take to make your own cardboard as part of a great experiment.

Step 1: Collect all the items you need to put together a Google Cardboard viewer of your own. You will need a corrugated cardboard sheet, such as E Flute, which can be found online and at art supply stores. Biconvex lenses work well for the lenses requirement of the Cardboard.

You will also need a neodymium ring magnet and a ceramic disk magnet. Make sure you get Velcro, a rubber band and an NFC tag, along with a ruler, glue, scissors and access to a laser cutter.

Step 2: Download the Cardboard design files on Google so you can print the template and begin arranging the Cardboard. The design files will show you how the Cardboard needs to be laid out and cut, and it will give you specific instructions.

Step 3: Google also features developer documentation so you can do your own coding for the Cardboard and other virtual reality viewers. The tutorial on the Cardboard page will help you get started with that coding and do some tests.
