Hello,

Wanted some reasoning help with the choice in components on my soon to purchase Alienware 17 VR laptop. I have 2 options im looking at (both regual HD 1080p not 4k):

1. $1524 thereabouts: GTX 1060 with 8gb ram with an i7 3.5Ghz processor.
2. $2074 thereabouts: GTX 1070 with 16gb ram with an i7 4.1Ghz processor.

Is the $550 difference worth it based on:
Im using the machine mainly for a game like battlefield and graphic designing. Want the laptop to run BF for the next 5 years.

Is it better to buy a solid spec machine one time as I don't normally change laptops often, or spend 1500 and look at changing the laptop in 3-4 years. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks!

PS in the second config is the $100 worth it for the upgrade from 3.5 to 4.1Ghz processor..

I was waiting for the QHD 1440p 120hz G-sync panel that will be out in mid-November, but sadly I found out that its a TN panel. Disheartened, I am now confused with alienware's mysterious decision when an IPS panel with 4ms display is quite available. I don't know if it's better to wait till mid november when they update their laptops with Kaby lake and ofcourse an IPS panel with G-sync and above 60hz. But can we be so patient :/

The kaby lake 7700hq is rumored still hasnt been announced but lets face it it wont increase performance, its just a energy efficient version of skylake.

Buying now is more worth it tbh.

I would say get the more powerful version as the 1070 will beat the 1060 a lot. Also I think battlefield is a cpu demanding game so make sure that you have a good cpu and that the laptop can cool it.

A alienware 17 with the 6700hq and a 980m can do full ultra 60 fps locked in battlefield 1. The 1060 is the same so you are fine with a 1060. 1070 if you want 1440p 1080 for 4k.
