Hi, looking for a new laptop, have a year old desktop i put together for games like skyrim, arma 3, fallout, rome 2 etc but am looking to get a laptop as well as i have kids and can rarely get away to do work or play etc.

I am basically looking for something that will last and keep working at a high standard, i have had bad experiences with laptops i have owned in the past so needs to work well. Looking for best value/spec for by needs.

Will need to play games like football manager, sim city, crusander kings, civ, indie games, but maybe a bit more (not fps or anything like that, basically games that you dont need reactions or to look at screen constantly). Will also play videos, internet, work and things like sketch-up/cad programs (nothing special) and looking at plans.

1. What is your budget?

around £400-600 (put can go up or down a bit depending on best product). Thats probably about $800 but prices are more expensive in UK

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?

large, dont need portabilty that much 15-16 inch minimum

3. What screen resolution do you want?

as high as i can get

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?

alongside desktop, living room pc basically that i can take to meetings

5. How much battery life do you need?

again not essential but as much as i can get

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?

Will need to play games like football manager, sim city, crusander kings, civ, indie games, but maybe a bit more (not fps or anything like that, basically games that you dont need reactions or to look at screen constantly). I happy to play games on lower settings, but dont want slow gaming.

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)

Will also play videos, internet, work and things like sketch-up/cad programs (nothing special) and looking at house plans.

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?

dont need much as i have 3 hard drives on my desktop (ssd, internal hdd and external), would love to have SSD as i am used to it, but may be out of my range

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.

amazon.co.uk, ebuyer.co.uk or any UK site really

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?

4-5 years maybe

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?

would like a dvd drive

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.

have no grudges, would like a quality product with good reliability, probably windows (although i have an iphone)

13. What country do you live in?

UK

14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.

Basically would like to know if it is worth paying more for a dedicated graphics or getting good proccessor spec. Had a look at Lenovo G510 i7 and thought it was good

thanks in advance for your suggestions

also i have been reading other threads talking about A10 proccessor instead of intel. I am very happy with current i5 on my desktop so that was one of reason i wanted intel...is this right way to go for my proccessor heavy needs? all advice welcome

If you have a budget get an AMD processor; otherwise I personally love Intel so I'd get an Intel processor.

Here are a few examples. I have heard A10 is good for gaming as the intergrated graphics are better, but will i use them with games im playing...will it make more sense to get better processor? And also is there anything in my price range to get tiny SSD for windows and boot up, i heard 8GB SSD mentioned in a Lenovo G505s spec but cant be sure.

here are few options i can see currently in UK:

Thanks. I have desktop. The laptop will simply be for strategy games, browsing and work.

But I want it to be quick with simple tasks. Hence why I am leaning towards an intel proccessor and integrated graphics. And an ssd card.

I did a pc specialist custom and can get:

i7 mq 2.4 4 cores. 240gb Kingston ssd. Intel 4600 graphics. DVD. Windows with cd. 15.6" clevo chassis. Matte ips full hd screen. For £570

The g510 i5 is about £650 and the y510p is £800 but with no ssd and 1 graphics card.

Am I missing something or is the custom laptop a good deal?

You get a better configuration when you choose the 15.6" cosmos. https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/cosmosII/
on this chassis you can get the gtx 850M at no extra charge. for just over your budget you can get an I5 4200M - more than enough for your games and most others and 8GB ram, and a glossy 1080p screen - this puts it over budget.

Thanks for ur help everyone. I was tempted by the cosmos 2 with 250gb ssd and 850m card. But that came to £818 with a bit of a wait.

So in the end went for Lenovo y510p for £800 and will be swapping out hdd for Samsung 250gb ssd £98 when I work out how to get windows on it. The extra style and design of the Lenovo was worth the extra.
