interesting, but how reliable??? any crackhead or drunk person or simply acidental clicks could jack the numbers high up. I am not saying this is the case for all of it, but still, I wouldnt rely on all those numbers. Over hyping and excitement can alter people's rationale and make them click"YES"...

Hard to explain, but I could never be an organ donor. The thought of someone else having my organs is just weird. Sure I'm dead and all, but just can't have it. I know it saves lives and all but still. Sorry.

I'd rather we search how to replace organs biologically or technologically that need replacement.

And to have this story covered a lot on a tech website is also weird.

^how you feel is why organ donations require the signature of the donor. If you're not comfortable giving someone your body after you die, so be it, it's your body and your right to decide.

As long as you aren't against others donating, that is.

I hope that governments of the world man the hell up, and make organ donation mandatory, nobody cares about stupid taboos, or religious bovine fecal matter, its about lives that could be saved, you will be dead, so its not like you can complain about! human societies needs to evolve to be less selfish

Haters gonna hate and be skeptical as much as they want to be... but there's no denying that more awareness and community involvement in such a good cause is a very positive step forward. I commend Facebook on this move... even if it might be grabbing at publicity.

Mandatory organ donations... Gotta love socialists. Not even your body belongs to you...

I understand. It really is up to each individual. Here in NZ you specify that on your drivers licence. I personally would but I understand some don't and I wouldn't expect them to. The reason we have it on a D/L is that if you die, they can cut you up while you are still fresh.

If i can save someone else, why not.

Only thing stopping me, is I've heard people not getting saved because they're a donor and someone else needs their organs. I'll give mine up when I die, my family knows what I want, but I'll never state it on my driver license.

I really dont see any reason not to do it... when I am dead, I will not need them any longer - why not put them to good use?

What you're calling for is the exact opposite of evolution. Funny that.

if it was mandatory, you know for a fact that a family would go to any length to save their own... i'm willing to bet money that people would kill others just for the organ, and just the chance for a match. we can currently test to check organs, if it was mandatory, everyone would be on a list, and their matches would be on their too.

thats a hypothetical, but you know it would happen, and one of the reasons it doesn't, is because you cant be sure who is and who isnt, without a match database.

the reason im not a donor, is because 1 life can save 8... all you need is someone who can do math and you see where im going. im not saying many people intentionaly do it... and im also not saying im a good person... but i know that given a situation, where i know 8 people can be saved over 1 person who is HEAVILY injured, i know i am capable of helping the 8 over the 1.

Opt-in policies are IMO the better solution. They don't solve the problem only synthetically lab grown organs will someday but it helps a lot. Most people don't have any problem with donating their organs but unless there is some way that they get in contact with it because of something among friends and family hardly anybody registers as an organ donor.
Those that don't want it should opt-out and everybody else is in.
It is like donating blood. It takes nothing but a little bit of time for a healthy person and has zero adverse effect unless you are a professional competitive athlete. Yet even I only do it if they show up on the university or in the local town hall and call me. I wouldn't go to a blood donation center on my own but have no problem giving 450ml away if it takes no more than 20 mins.

Are you not asked in every state when you get/renew your driver's license if you want to be a donor? That's great to see such a huge surge but at the same time sad to see that many people weren't donors until it was the "cool" thing to do on Facebook.

For those of you who say you're not donors because you won't receive every chance of your life being saved need to take off your tin foil hats; that's just ridiculous. I agree it is a weird thought of having your organs in someone else's body; but at the same time, isn't it a pretty awesome thought to know you saved multiple lives? People have their reasons not to donate and it is their choice, but in my opinion it all comes down to selfishness. At some point in your life, you will probably know someone who needs an organ or tissue; will your opinion about organ donation change then? If you need an organ to save your life are you going to refuse one because you yourself are not a donor? For some it is a big decision and if you are not an organ donor please ask yourself these questions and maybe reconsider.
