Can I back up an app?

So I want to back up apps on my phone that are no longer available in the Google Play store.

Is there a way to back them up into a portable .apk file?

if your phone is rooted, you can use an root explorer to copy them. also programs like titanium backup to backup files.

Well rooting isn't an option for me at this moment.

The phone in question needs to be sent in to an insurance company within 15 days. Is there a rootless method?
