can i go from a iphone 5c to an android without changing my phone contract

I have a I phone 5c that needs to be replaced. My contract is up at the end of the year and i need a new phone and don't want to extend my contract. I am looking to buy a htc m8 and want to know if this will extend my contract.

which mobile service provider? usually when you bring your own unlock phone, it doesn't extend contract. But contact them just in case.
