Solved! Can I use an optical out to 3.5 for my bluetooth transmitter?

I had my Bluetooth transmitter connected to my old tv using the rca audio out. My new tv just has optical out and 3.5 mini plug. The mini plug works but I have to un plug it to go back to using tv speakers. I got an optical out to 3.5 plug adapter but I get no sound.
