TVs can't read .mkv formats it says invalid audio codec. Changing the format could only lower the quality of the video so I am planning to buy HDMI cable and connect my laptop to my TV since laptops can read .mkv files. Will it work? I really wanted to watch it on my tv for a larger display and great sounds. Thank you in advance :)

Yes. The de-coding and even the rendering will all be done by the laptop. The TV screen is merely acting as a display, and the audio coming from the laptop has already been de-coded too, and is basically a line-level output.
