Canon box barcodes....

According to the current canon cashback offer, you have to cut out the
barcode on the lens box and send it in with the vouchers / photocopy of
the receipt. However, cutting up the box may well reduce the resale
value of the lens (I have noticed on eBay that people seem to pay a
little more for a lens with a box - maybe assuming its been better
looked after etc etc).
Therefore, I am thinking of buying an empty box from a canon 28-135 IS
and using this instead of the original for the cashback. They appear on
ebay now and then (usual US). Anyone know if the box / barcode is likely
to be different if the box is a year or so old ?

The barcode might be specific to the lens that was in the box.

Why not just photocopy the barcode?

nope - has to be a cutout. The barcode will be for the lens.. but not
unique per lens in each box. Otherwise, every camera store everywhere
would need to store a barcode for every lens of every type.

The lenses all have a product barcode, and a serial number barcode. So
follow the instructions. They (Canon) would probably want all barcodes.

They do everything to discourage any money back.

You are correct regarding lenses and cameras selling for a little more with
the original box. Although this is more true of collectors cameras and
lenses than it is of current items. You could try the empty box route if
you can get one cheaply enough but I wouldn't be surprised if the bar codes
were slightly different.
I think that they want you to destroy the box so that you are prevented from
potentially claiming the rebate and then returning the lens to a retailer
for an exchange or refund.

This cashback offer is a mess. I wrote to Canon UK and asked if buying from
a shop in the Channel Islands was the same as buying from a UK shop -
answer, yes.

I then bought a 1.4x extender from 7 Day Shop. When I tried to fill in the
on line cashback form I couldn't tell which was the serial number and what
bar code they wanted - there were several. I phoned Canon UK to ask what
numbers were the right ones. It turns out that 7 Day Shop is not an
authorised dealer and I may not qualify for cashback. Why the hell can't
they simplify the system? Simply bung a cashback voucher in the box with the
lens - and don't ask us to cut up the boxes.

I did write top Canon UK and tell them that they had great products and
rubbish organisation of their promotion but I haven't heard back yet. It
won't stop me buying many more hundreds of pounds worth of Canon products
but it does make me irritated.

Rebates are generally price reductions, you can't just "Simply bung a
cashback voucher in the box with the lens" Cutting off the barcodes is to
prevent fraud, some have tried to claim a rebate on a product they have
returned for refund. So you buy a $1,000 lens, photocopy the sales receipt,
and barcodes then return the lens for a full refund, 4-8 weeks later a
cheque for $200 is in your mailbox, good scam, which is why the orginal
barcodes have to be cut off the box.

Is there a current rebate on the 28-135 canon IS lens ? I just bought one
and would like in on the rebate if there is one.

John,

How do you find a list of "authorised" dealers? I will be purchasing a new
lens - and was looking at 7dayshop.

Thanks

I didn't - I asked if a shop in the Channel Islands would qualify as UK, was
told yes -- and then told no. 7 Day Shop appear not to qualify. BUT, their
prices can be so keen that it's worth buying from them anyway; then bung the
coupon away.

The 70-200 F4 zoom is £399 from 7 Day - that's Hong Kong prices from a
nearly local dealer. Tonight I ordered a 50mm f1.4 from 7 Day. At £223
delivered it's the same price (or less) than from the Hong Kong dealers.

It will pay to have a good look around on both eBay and 7 Day. What lens
are you looking at?

I was looking at the 70-200 f4L, I think you had recommended it to me in a
previous post, however, checking my pictures I have taken with the 350d kit
18-55 lens, they look a little out of focus when viewing distance. I've
come to the conclusion its either me, the camera or the lens. I'm placing
my money on the lens as it appears to have some poor reviews. I now need to
purchase a lens that will give me sharp pictures for landscapes and general
holiday snaps- quickly ( as the latter is approaching fast). My budget has
shrunk due to the purchase of an Epson P-2000 for storage, the lens I would
have liked would be the 17-40 LUSM. I'm now looking at the Tamron AF
28-75mm f2.8 XR Di as a quick 3rd party purchase - any other
recommendations?
