Recently bought a new projector (not exactly top of the range - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01KWKBCUY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) but I’m having trouble getting the settings right (contrast, brightness, RBG, etc) and the projected image looks pretty weird (and very different to same image displayed on my laptop).

Does anyone have any tips? Or could you point me towards some kind of guide I can use?

Or... as I’m afraid... might the problem simply be that I bought a crap projector?

Solution
The problem may be to much light in the room which will wash out the picture. If the image size is too large that might also affect the picture quality.
This might help to set up the projector.

Menu screen looks fine, but it's pretty basic with very little colour, so there's not much to go by.

I'm using an HDMI from my laptop to AV receiver, then HDMI from the receiver to projector. When I get home tonight I'll test some other options (e.g. VGA, or skipping the AV receiver) to see if that makes any difference...
