i have a usb disk with installed ubuntu 14.01 on it. it works smoothly in my laptop. but it cant be run on another laptop. i checked my bios setting and its ok. when the boot process is transfered to the usb drive it will show message "missing operating system" and than boot from the os installed on my harddrive.

Solution
You mention BIOS, but is it possible you have the UEFI replacement for the BIOS that newer computers are using now? If so, you have to disable secure boot to be able to boot from external devices.

Good luck.

So the system is obviously not booting from the USB drive.

Check first boot device again in BIOS settings, and if it needs changing don't forget to "save & exit".
You can also try the "one-time only" boot device menu (F11 or F12) and choose "USB" from that.

I already tried it... but stuck on the same issue.
