Google’s Chromecast, a dongle that plugs into your TV and allows you to stream content from your computer and mobile device, is a way to bring online video to the big screens in your house. But if you’ve just bought a Chromecast dongle and are confused about how to cast from your computer to your TV, the steps below should help you out!
Step 1
The Chromecast dongle is designed to plug into an HDMI port on your TV, just like an HDMI cable or Blu-Ray player cord would. Once you’ve plugged Chromecast into your TV, connect the USB cord that came in the box to the other side and either plug it into the USB port on your TV (if there is one) or to an outlet on the wall. (An AC adapter also comes with Chromecast.)
Step 2
The HDMI port you plugged your Chromecast dongle into has a specific input on your TV controls. Find the input using your TV remote. The input you are looking for should have a “set me up” screen with Chromecast info on it.
Step 3
Now, get out your laptop and connect it to your home’s Wi-Fi network. You’ll have to install the Google Chrome browser, as other browsers won't work with Chromecast. Once you’ve downloaded and launched Chrome, direct your browser to cast.google.com/setup and download the Chromecast utility file.
Step 4
Launch the utility and it will go to work trying to detect your Chromecast. Once the utility finds your device, it will prompt you to launch the setup process. Click “Continue.”
Step 5
A menu with a code will pop up on your computer screen. If the same code also appears on your television screen, the utility has found the right Chromecast device. Click “That’s my code” and your computer will be linked to your Chromecast device. You’ll have to also select a Wi-Fi network to which you can connect both devices.

You should get a message saying “ready to cast,” after which you will be able to cast any videos from your Google Chrome browser—whether from YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, or some other streaming service—to your TV!
