Cd/dvd wont work

Hello,
i have tried everything there is t get it to read cds and dvds. it makes the noise and begins then ejects teh cd or says media isnt readable. its an optiarc DVD RW AD 7530A ATA and i use vista if that helps. i've uninstalled reinstalled it, tried updating drivers, ran microsoft fix it, tried changing things in the registry and pretty much anything else. could someone please help.
